which merchant account providers would anyone recommend that offers free terminal programs for the merchants?

i think this will be very helpful for people in this forum.

I always see ads in the Green Sheet about ISO's giving free or discounted equipment to their sales reps to sell or place as they wish. I'm sure there are pricing/deal requirements to qualify, but not sure.

As far as advances go - we try to have our reps reprogram whenever possible - or at least make sure the existing machine is shut off or returned. The last thing I want is second terminal floating around.

We offer free terminals. What we do is have the merchants trade in their existing terminals to their sales rep, and let the rep sell it on ebay or something for a profit.

The majority of processors have "free" terminal programs. There is always some type of additional charge associated with them like an increased batch fee, increased transaction fee, involuntary merchant club or supply/warranty fees etc. In most instances the merchant is far better off either buying or leasing a terminal unless they are low transaction count. Occasionally there is a need to be able to offer a "free" terminal to compete with another processor but the vast majority of merchants already have a terminal unless you're concentrating on new businesses which really isn't the best route.

I learned a long time ago, there is no free lunch. Free terminals are great when they are coupled with a good processor and no hidden costs. (It is very rare to find a processor with no hidden fees)

If you are a start-up ISO looking to keep overhead low, it is understandable to give up a more of your potential revenue/split to provide free terminals. In this scenario I would go with a smaller processor/ISO offering free terminals, one you can build on the way up- Larger ISO's tend to be more political and you might get screwed on your residuals down the road. (which happens way too often)

Again, you get what you invest. Terminals are now more affordable than ever and have a slew of tempting features for your merchants. One in particular is the new Dejavoo Terminal (Carl Cotto, good friend of mine runs there new business development: 516-551-7167)- it has some backend accounting features which can make life much easier for your merchants.

If you are interested in more cost-effective terminals contact Bancnet out in Texas, Art Trapp is a long-time friend and has some great deals. When buying in bulk, contact leasing companies- they usually keep a stock of refurbished equipment at significant discounts.

Whats the contract term for the merchant?
Whats the cancellation fee?
What are the minimum fees we can charge the merchant?
Is it pure interchange? or you mark up a few points above interchange?
Whats the upfront conversion bonus structure?
